The topic of the presentation was “The Gulf Stream as a Modulator for Atmospheric Blocking” and Jamie discussed his current research referring to his proposed mechanism related to PV anomalies, the changes in the PV under different conditions and the SLHF influence on the PV in the cold sector of the cyclone.
Seminar by Davide Faranda at University of Barcelona, 14 July 2022
Davide Faranda, EDIPI’s Training Coordinator, gave a seminar discussing “Atmospheric circulation compounds antrophogenic warming and its impacts in Europe”.
Seminar by Aleksa Stankovic (ESR 1), 27 June 2022
The title of the presentation was “Droughts and extreme storms in the IPCC’s AR6: Taking a look at Chapter 11”. Aleksa briefly introduced the aforementioned chapter, discussed the urgency of addressing extreme events and gave an overview of the conclusions drawn by the IPCC commission on the two weather events: droughts and storms.
Seminar by Valeria Mascolo (ESR 3), 15- 17 June 2022
Valeria Mascolo presented a poster about the influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability and of the soil moisture in the occurrence of extreme summer heat waves at the ‘Journée du lancement du GDR – Défis théoriques pour les sciences du climat’ that took place in Paris.
Seminar by Emma Allwright (ESR 9), 16 June 2022
The topic of the presentation was “Dynamics of heat waves in Europe” and described the effects of human-induced climate change. In particular, it focused on the dynamics of heat waves, and is motivated as part of a broader study on the drivers, predictability and impacts of extreme weather events in Europe.
STORMTRACKS2022: midlatitude storm-tracks workshop
The Stormtracks2022 conference took place in Oléron, France from 29th May to 3rd June. It hosted world leading climate scientists as well as three EDIPI PhD candidates, Mireia Ginesta Fernandez, Vinita Deshmukh (CNRS) and Jamie Mathews (ICL). This event allowed for the sharing of new ideas and research, collaboration across continents and created new social connections which has been dearly missed in the scientific community over the last few years. Gwendal Rivière (Vinita’s supervisor) was one of the organizers.
